Closing and Commitments
A journey of deep learning and reflection.
This journey has been one of deep learning and reflection and could not have been done without all of the brilliance poured into the process. Whenever Rebellious Root holds training and space, we close each one with commitments. We do this work for the community and have a responsibility to be held accountable for doing what we say we are going to do. When we share aloud how we plan to get the work done in an intentional way, we begin to manifest those things and allow for others to witness.
We asked participating organizations to share ways that they are committed to carrying out equity in their organizations at all levels. Here are some of what was shared:
Ask intentional questions to funders and examine white dominant habits within philanthropy and government funding to ensure that they are not extractive or exploitative to the community.
Practice active listening in all environments (Participants, community, employee, horizontal/vertical staff level) – hold space outside of regular programming, meetings, workshops to have honest conversations about how people are doing and what would be most helpful to them.
Embody a “Nothing about us without us” mentality – be committed to centering the voices and experiences of those that you serve and take their lead on what they need, get feedback and adjust as you go.
We encourage you to continue to be intentional, grounded and hold steady towards equity. Continue to review and adjust your practices, ask for feedback from the community and be willing to share transparently about where you are and where you are headed. Ask for help when you need it and seek peer support. There is so much brilliance and knowledge that the answer might be at a partner organization.
We continue to see your organizations as a beacon of light in this world.
